2009 Phil & Ted's SPORT BUGGY - 2 Kids in a SINGLE Stroller

About the Sport Buggy:

Straight from the designers in New Zealand: the Phil & Ted's Sport Buggy.

This uniquely versatile and suberbly engineered stroller functions in any of four (4) modes: single infant, single toddler, baby and toddler, or two toddler mode. Since an estimated 75% of families will have a second child within a few years of the first, the Sport Buggy is often an ideal stroller solution - its flexiblity can meet parents' changing needs as infants turn into toddlers, newborn younger siblings join the family, and older toddlers outgrow the need for a stroller.

There are several features and functions that really set the Sport Buggy apart from other strollers. The Sport Buggy allows an infant to lie completely flat; this is often considered healthier for very young children, and allows you to start using your stroller with your newborn immediately. The swivelling front wheel and narrow width (especially compared to standard side-by-side doubles) make the Sport Buggy extremely manueverable, which means more freedom and less hassle for active parents. The height-adjustable handlebar, extremely compact fold-down, and child handlebar are all great features. Of course, the most outstanding thing about the Sport Buggy is its easy transformability - and the functionality and value that this brings. (The various configurations are discussed individually down below.)

As for limitations and drawbacks, it should be noted that the Sport Buggy is not good for jogging (due to stride space - foot to stroller axle) - nor is it designed for twins. If you're looking to jog with your kids, or have twins, you might want to check out some of the other double jogging strollers.

Some parents, familiar with side-by-side double strollers, worry about the limited view from the rear seat - NOT TRUE - There is plenty of viewing area on each side, and we've actually found that many kids prefer the rear seat over the front one. Finally, to suppliment the underseat basket, ask about the Phil & Ted's Panier Bags and/or the Backpac X accessories, this is adds space when two kids are on the stroller.

Improved: Sport Buggy
Based on feedback from their customers and dealers, Phil and Ted's has made some improvements over previous models, including:

  • Adjustable Handlebar
  • Padding under the thighs
  • Fenders included
  • Wider seats
  • Padded shoulder straps
  • Simplified conversion between modes
  • Longer handle
  • Fold-down locking strap

Stage I (Single Newborn Mode):
Importantly for the safety and health of your infant, the SPORT buggy has the ability to lay completely flat, by simply releasing the buckles and zipper. Zip it up if you prefer your baby to be slightly inclined. The removeable or 'roll up' back stops drafts and allows a clear view of your baby. While not 100% necessary, I do strongly recommend the Cocoon for infants - it's a slightly padded bassinet that zips up for coverage, unzips for freedom, and has carrying handles so you can easily remove your sleeping baby. Infants can face toward you or away from you. Flatbed Dimensions: Length: 23" Width: 9", Depth: 24".

Stage II (Single Upright Toddler Mode):
This is the traditional walking stroller mode. The three-position seat slightly reclines (using two inner zippers) for a sleepy toddler, or fully reclines to a flat bed by releasing the buckles. The removable front child handle bar is a desirable feature for both kids and parent; it offers kids something to hold on to, and makes it easy for parents to secure their kids for short trips. The overhead canopy is quite adequate, but not as encompassing as some others on the market. An easy to use sun/bug shield is available as an accessory. The padded harness is a simple 5 point system that is simpler to use than most.

Stage III (Toddler & Newborn Mode - Second Seat Option Required):
This is a truly unique option! Simply pop the child handlebar off, release the toddler seat down, and snap the second seat into place. It’s really simple to do. In this mode, you'll have a toddler sitting upright in front, and a newborn below laying flat in the rear (usually for the first 3-4 months). This position is NOT for running, but is amazingly practical for those with a newborn and a toddler. The front toddler position does not recline in this mode. Dimensions in Stage III mode: Seat back: 18.5", Width: 9". The second seat has a capacity of 55 pounds when installed in the front position.

Stage IV (Two Toddler Mode: Second Seat Option Required):
This mode is designed for a larger child up front and smaller child in back. When your infant grows out of the laying flat stage at around 3-4 months, it's time for the "two toddler" mode. Having your two kids riding in tandem means that you can go anywhere a single stroller can go. My main concern in this mode was that I’d be kicking the rear seat while walking. I’m 6’2”, and this is turned out not to be the case; there's actually plenty of leg room. If you go riding with one child, only the front seat is used, for safety. You always want to have the biggest child in front - the second seat has a capacity up to 33 lbs. when it's installed in back.. By the time the younger child is anywhere near that weight, the older child will be too big for the stroller. The younger one then jumps up front, the rear seat is removed, and it is a "Stage II" single stroller again.
